The Colchester Historical Enactment Society (C.H.E.S. for short) was established by a group of like minded enthusiasts in 1988, in order to stage displays of Combat and living history to the public. C.H.E.S. Is now a thriving reenactment group that offers its members the opportunity to take part in living history shows and battle re-enactments both in Essex and throughout Britain. The society creates a show based on a group of Saxon warriors at the time of the Norman Conquest. We also recreate the lives of mariners during the age of sail, in particular, the "Golden Age of Piracy" during the early eighteenth century when pirates hunted the trade routes and the Royal Navy patrolled in their defense. C.H.E.S. has taken part on events that have depicted historical periods as diverse as Iron age Celts and the 1986 miners strike, and provided manpower for films and television programs as well as participating in shows varying in scale from single combat to battles involving over a thousand warriors. SAXONS C.H.E.S. has always been a multi period society, representing the various interests of its membership. and has in its time, re-enacted a wide variety of different historical periods. However, from the very start, our core period has always been Early medieval, and as such, our main subject for enactment is 10th Century Saxons. The societies interest in maritime history has now expanded, and we now also do shows based on Essex tea Smugglers, and both the Merchant Mariners, and the Royal Navy of the early Eighteenth Century.
